I remember this incident all too well. This happened in - I want to say - south of Baghdad, maybe middle April 2003, and this 'news person' was part of 3/327th INF, showing up one day, smiling and trying to high-five whoever was around, to ingratiate himself with soldiers. After it was disclosed that he was providing OPSEC info over a live broadcast prior to any missions, a half-dozen of us were about to beat his stupid, arrogant ass deep into the sand. Part of the reason he was very quickly fired and removed from the unit was that command was more afraid of what might happen to him if he were to linger around for a while. That concept of attaching non-warfighters was a distraction at the least, and a massive error, since the few that attached themselves to us were not bound to listen to orders for their safety. Many had a detachment from reality, and a weird mentality that they had some higher responsibility to report objectively, regardless of their safety and what they did to divert essential shooters to protect them, instead of the mission at hand.
